New Species of Leaf Monkey

Discovering the new species of Leaf Monkey in Bolikhamxai

Welcome to the exciting primate discovery in Bolikhamxai Province, Lao PDR!
Rob Timmins, Technical Director of the Saola Foundation, recently orchestrated a thrilling mission for our Annamite Mountains Research and Conservation Team. Their goal? To find and document a new species of leaf monkey.

Following several decades of fieldwork it has become apparent that an undescribed species of leaf monkey with a very restricted range, very likely resides in limestone karst habitats of central Bolikhamxai. This new species would be a member of the ‘Francoisi’ (Tracypithecus francoisi) of limestone karst associated monkeys.

Karst limestone occurs quite extensively in central Bolikhamxai but is isolated from other karst areas of the Annamites occupied by other species of this group of taxa (e.g. Trachypithecus laotum, T. ebanus and T. hatinhensis). If indeed a new species it would unquestionably qualify as Critically Endangered following IUCN Red List criteria.

We believe small numbers of these monkeys survive scattered through the larger karst massifs, but hunting poses an ever-present danger to them.

The mission is not yet over

To secure the species’ future, the Saola Foundation will need to do the following:
Confirm New Species: We aim to verify the existence of this new species through field observations and morphological studies, ensuring it meets taxonomic standards.

Describe and Document: Once confirmed, our next step is to formally describe the species and document its unique characteristics under the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN) guidelines.

Assess Population and Conservation Needs: Through extensive surveys and collaboration with local communities, we’ll pinpoint population locations and develop a conservation strategy tailored to their needs.

Establish Protected Areas: Advocating for the creation of protected areas at provincial and national levels is crucial to protecting this new species’ habitat.

Engage Local Communities: Community involvement is key. We’ll work closely with local communities to develop positive conservation schemes that benefit both the monkeys and the community.

Synergy with Saola

Our efforts align seamlessly with ongoing initiatives at the Saola Foundation. The proximity of these primates to planned activities for the Saola search allows us to maximise resources and expertise efficiently. This ensures a streamlined approach to conservation, with a clear focus on positive outcomes for species facing imminent extinction and their habitats.

Updates with the public

Expect updates as we progress with this groundbreaking project. From in situ webcams to personalised naming of individual monkeys, we aim to involve supporters like you in our conservation journey. Together, we can make a lasting impact on wildlife preservation in Laos.
